This club teaches advanced Scratch games programming, how to build a website using professional hand coded methods (html and CSS), and how to originate, edit and integrate digital media such as games, images, sound and video.
Every term is different
Each term we explore different techniques and skills to excite and motivate our students. Your child will be engaged, educated and entertained.
Students are expected to already be familiar with all the primary coding elements of Scratch, or those of a comparable platform. From this beginning they explore increasingly complex code algorithms and employ them to create interactive game-play. Students are taught to build a complex game, then asked to modify and extend it, and finally put into practice what they have learnt to create their own games.
Games design is not just about coding. Our students also learn how to create, edit and download images to add to their games. They learn the uses of a variety of bitmap and vector file formats, and the concepts of copyright. We use Pixelmator for Mac which emulates many of the features of Photoshop, another industry standard.
Music production and sound FX
Games come to life when music and FX are added. We have an extensive library of FX and our students can produce their own music by layering instrument performances in Garageband.
Club content is tailored to challenge each student. They are continually assessed to establish the level they are working at and to stretch them.
Learn together and then create your own games
The class learns by being taught how to build complete games, each one using a specific technique, and then each student is encouraged to put into practice what they have learnt, either by modifying the game, or by creating their own game.
Create then play
Our clubs are not simply an opportunity to play games, students must create their own and in only some of the sessions are they permitted to play games others have created.
What is taught?
Students learn concepts and skills in games coding including file management, animation, character and object control, and coding concepts such as event handlers, control statements, variables loops, properties and functions. These are industry standard concepts and skills and are transferable to future learning and the workplace.
Age range & SEN
This activity is suitable for any 9-11 year old child who has some experience of Scratch or has a keen interest in learning coding. Is your child ready?
