Scratch game making tutorial 138

Christmas crackers

In this tutorial you will create a game in which you pull crackers to find jokes.

Complete these steps ..

1. Open Scratch, OR create a new game (from the top menu choose "File>New").

2. Select the cat sprite under the stage, then click in the naming box to give your cat a name ..

3. Click on the "only face left-right" button to make sure your cat stays upright ..

4. Add this first script to the cat to allow us to stop our game by pressing the "E" button on our keyboard ..

5. The cat is too big, let's set its size and make sure it doesn't get hidden behind other sprites. Add this script ..

Press the "B" (for Begin) button on your keyboard and the cat should shrink in size.

6. Now, let's make the cat follow the mouse-pointer as you move it around the stage. Add this script ..

Press the "B" (for Begin) button on your keyboard and move your mouse-pointer around the stage. Your cat should follow it.

7. Press "E" on your keyboard to end your game, then use "File>Save as" to save your game. Name your game "Christmas crackers"..

8. Let's add the Christmas cracker sprites. Download and save these three sprites ..

Now, use the "choose new sprite from file" button under the stage to import them ..

9. We are now going to add the scripts to the crackers so that when they are clicked they spin around, break and tell us a joke.

Select one of the crackers, it doesn’t matter which one. Switch to the Costumes tab and you will see that it has two costumes, "ready" and "pulled" ..

Switch back to the Scripts tab and add the first script ..

We will space the crackers out on the stage. Press the "B" key to run the script and then drag the cracker on the stage to place it wherever you like.

10. Add the script to make the cracker spin around and tell a joke when it is clicked ..

Press the "B" key to test your game. Click on the first cracker to see the animation and joke.

When you are ready, press "E" to end your game.

11. Use "File>Save" to re-save your game.

12. You need the same scripts for each cracker, but each cracker needs a new joke. You can use your own jokes or the jokes below.

Don't forget to press "B" so that your crackers shrink down in size, and then drag to arrange them around the stage.

When you have done the scripts for all 3 crackers, right-click their thumbnail images under the stage and select "duplicate" to make more ..

Here are some joke ideas ..

13. When you have finished, use "File>Save" to re-save your game ..

14. Finally, select the stage and paint a colourful background ..

15. When you have finished, use "File>Save" to re-save your game.

You've finished this tutorial. Well done!
