Scratch game making tutorial 104

Monster escape

In this tutorial you will create a simple game in which a cat must collect all the bananas without being caught by the monster.

Complete these steps ..

1. Open Scratch, OR create a new game (from the top menu choose "File>New").

2. Click to select the Cat (sprite1) under the stage.

3. Re-name "sprite 1". Name it "Cat".

Now click the middle of the 3 vertical buttons to make sure the Cat cannot turn upside down. When you hover the mouse over the button you will see it is called "only face left right".

4. Now add the following scripts to the Cat ..

Look at the scripts. We are using the "b" key on our keyboard to BEGIN the game, and the "e" key to END it.

5. Now test your game. Press the "b" key on your keyboard to begin your game, and then move the mouse-pointer around the stage. The Cat should follow it. Press "e" for end when you are ready to continue making your game.

6. Use "File>Save as" to save your game. Call it "Monster escape"..

7. Now we will add the bananas which the Cat will collect. Click on the "choose new sprite from file" button under the stage. It's the middle one ..

Open the "Things" folder by selecting it and clicking "OK" ..

Select "bananas1" and click "OK" ..

You should now see the little "bananas1" thumbnail image under the stage. It will be named "sprite1". This time we will not bother to re-name it ..

8. Select the bananas sprite and then add these scripts to it ..

9. Press "b" to BEGIN your game and test it to see if the Cat can collect the bananas. They should disappear when he touches them.

10. We need to save the game again. This time use "File>Save" to re-save your game.

11. We need 10 banana sprites spread around the stage for the Cat to collect.

Right-click the banana sprite and select "duplicate". Click on the duplicate on the stage and drag it to somewhere else. Do this another 8 times, spreading your bananas around the stage ..

12. Now we need our monster. Use the "Choose new sprite from file" button under the stage again. In the "Fantasy" folder you will find "dragon-1a". Choose it and press "OK".

13. Re-name the dragon sprite. Call it "monster".

Now click the middle of the 3 vertical buttons to make sure the monster cannot turn upside down. When you hover the mouse over the button you will see it is called "only face left right".

14. Click on the monster's "Costume" tab then click the "Import" button and select the "dragon-1b" costume ..

We now have two costumes for the monster. We will use them to animate the monster. We do not need to re-name the costumes.

15. Add these scripts to the monster ..

16. Use "File>Save" again to re-save your game.

17. Test your game by pressing"B" to begin your game. Remember you can END it by pressing the "e" key.

18. Well done, you're finished! Can you add a second monster?
